Birthdays and kites

I turned 32 over the weekend. And, lucky for me, my birthday corresponds to the annual Kites in the Park festival. Fact: I LOVE KITES. We had a fun lil birthday party on Saturday night, and a few hardy folk continued on to fly kites on Sunday. The weather forecast was terrible so a lot of people stayed home, which meant the park was just the right amount of crowded. Things were very overcast and the rain held off until we were walking back to our cars on the way home, but there wasn’t much wind. Small children seemed to have no problem getting their kites in the air, but we weren’t quite as successful. Last time I went to Kites in the Park was several years ago before I moved. That year, you could get a piece of Tyvex sheeting, a few sticks of balsa wood, and a string to make a kite. Things have gotten fancier since then, and this year we bought $2 make-a-kite kits.

Birthdays are kind of a weird holiday, because you get celebrated for not really doing anything except existing (which is cool I guess). They make me very introspective – I think a lot about what’s happened since my last birthday, and what I hope will happen over the next year. 31 was a wacky year, but this birthday was great, and I think 32 will be pretty great too.
